At this writing, almost everything available on this blog was composed and written before artificial intelligence became available. Some of the academic papers are quite old, written in the early 2000s, and August’s Long Shadow, my memoir of the Tom Baer murder and the years that followed (which I consider the cornerstone of the blog itself) was written and published in 2018, though I occasionally rework or edit it.
I have almost no experience with A.I., nor do I have any real interest in it. Other than one rather clunky A.I. platform that has been made available to me in my workplace, I have never even tried it. Though I speculate it will be helpful to medicine and other technical fields, I think it destructive to human culture and human development (as an educator, I know this to be true). I am not naïve, though, and I don’t think there is any way to stop whatever A.I. is about to bring to us.
Whatever role A.I. may play in our lives moving forward, it has no place on this blog. Absolutely nothing appearing under my name on this site was written by, edited by, updated by, or proofed by any kind of artificial intelligence. It is true that I often use semicolons and em dashes. I have an education. I like to write. I like to use punctuation correctly. If the use of these old punctuation marks is an A.I. flag, I don’t care. I work hard when I write, and I am going to do it the way I want to, artificial intelligence be damned.
